the wrong thing to say

this is the first time i was quoted in WIRED. not the best choice of words. i got a pretty funny (ANGRY) call from our PR agent at the time...and learned to choose my words more wisely, at least when i know they are being quoted.

"It's a bit sad that someone had to launch a format that accommodates people too fat and lazy to get off the couch and return a movie to the store," scoffs Blaine Graboyes, creative and technical director of Zuma Digital in New York, a DVD services and authoring facility.

NIST 2002

i am trying to find the presentation i gave at the NIST / DVDA Conference in 2002. it was about all the things i did wrong at ZUMA - and a few of the things we did right. but more about what we did wrong.

K's article about the Final Fantasy DVDs

P and K and their baby W came over for dinner this weekend and it made me think that we met as professional adults and have all known each other for 10 years now - and more friends than work now.

he accompanied me on the blind date at which i met T, who i am about to marry...

K wrote this great article once about the DVDs for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which i executive produced and creative directed back in day at ZUMA. it was our last great hurrah! and worth it too.

FF DVD cover

make sure you get the Special Edition version on DVD and not the 1 disc DVD or the UMD.

DVD Pitches

here are some old pitches and concepts for original DVDs that i wrote or worked on with friends. if you have the cash and want to produce a cool project, consider DVD Party Games or The Film Composers Series.

these are PDFs and i guess i consider them my property, but someone i respect is credited with once saying - steal my shit, i'll just make more!

Guba?

btw, have you seen Guba - it searches Usenet groups for videos and photos, then makes them available for streaming and download in various formats, including for iPod and PSP.

storyboarding PPT

not that i knew anything about the subject, but i found someone who did. back in 2002 i was asked to speak at the LA DV Conference on "storyboarding" - so this is what i presented. the better part of the session was Josh Hayes, who i met researching the field and have since stayed in touch with.

if you ever need a great storyboard artist, call josh. and ask for a copy of his demo DVD. we spent a long time working on that one!

music conference talk about UMD

i recently got invited to the DVD Music Conference to speak about UMD and other portable media platforms and how that is effecting the music business, etc.

i prepared this PPT before knowing it was a panel, so never got it show it. thought someone may enjoy it after the fact.

the conference was very insidery and it was both insightful and scary to hear the executives that control so much retail power just lay it out for the audience on how to actually make it work.

from what i learned, it actually does seem possible to have a success with a packaged media product, whether music or video, major label or indie - (1) make something good in the first place, (2) include the whole team from the start so the "timeline" for release is strong, (3) successfully use grassroots and online marketing techniques, and (4) offer the product for sale at a fair price.

i will let you know how it works out for me!

DVD Games are cooler than you think

when i say i make "games" people think console games, and while i am interested in that too, i think that DVD Games are a more interesting challenge right now.

everyone has a DVD player, so you can make games for everyone, not just for gamers. and i think that everyone is into playing games - it just matters what you call a "game".

video clip games, casual games, interactive stories - DVD provides a ubiquitous, interactive digital video platform for the R&D of these concepts as they lead into IPTV, DVRs and more.

check out: bEQUAL and ZOO Digital and Scene It and Snap TV - and keep an eye out for DVD Games and give one a try sometime soon. you may be surprised by how much fun you are having.
